Bike and Mopeds

Cycling is becoming an ever more popular way of getting around Rome, especially for those who need to travel around the city centre.  Rome has plenty designated cycle routes, such as along the Tevere riverbank, which is very pleasant.

Mopeds are by far the most popular mode of transport, and it's not unusual to see smartly dressed businessmen aged 60 plus zipping about Rome on a Vespa.  Due to the amount of traffic and narrowness of many of the roads in the centre its quite simply the most practical option.

As with any major city it is of paramount importance to never leave a bike unattended, and to use at least one lock to secure it to something solid that won’t move.

Aside from the traffic, another thing to watch out for is tram tracks.  Especially when wet, these metal tracks in the road can be very slippery and have brought many a cyclist and Vespa motorist crashing down to the ground.  Helmets are compulsory and are also very strongly recommended.

Bikes and mopeds can be rented, although most rental shops are in the city centre and aimed at tourists who are happy to pay from €15 for a day for a bike and .  If you live in Rome it would be well worth buying a second hand bike.
