Grottaferrata

Grottaferrata is a pretty little town, whose main attraction is still the San Nilo Abbey.  Spring is the best time for exploring this charming town, which still retains much of its ancient infrastructure and architecture. The Abbey was founded in 1044  by Saint Nilus, and even today is still considered one of the most important centres of Byzantine culture. It is open from 8.30am – 12pm and 4.30pm – 6pm, closed on Mondays.

Grottaferrata means “iron gate”, and this is thought to be a reference to the entry gate of a republican crypt in the area, where there were many Christian catacombs.

For those who enjoy extreme sports, Grottaferrata offers perhaps one of the most extreme:  paragliding off the edge of the Castelgandolfo crater.  Those who prefer gastronomic pleasures can sample some tasty local specialities in the many trattorie and small local restaurants.
