Soccer in Italy.

Soccer is the number one sport in Italy. Lots of people live for the game they call ´Il calcio´ and that means football or soccer. Italian football fans get really fanatical when their club is playing a match:  take the Southern European temperament and double it, and you have an Italian soccer fan.

Italian Serie A to C

Eighteen teams battle it out for the Italian football honours in Serie A. Serie B teams consist of a further 20 teams, while another 90 teams compete for the medals at Serie C level, itself split up into several more manageable sub-competitions.

Serie A is dominated by an elite group of teams that generally take the honours. Among the leading teams, which are also very well known to football fans beyond Italy, are Juventus Turin that won its 28th league title in 2005, Inter Milan and AC Milan.

Soccer in Rome

A.S. Roma and Lazio Rome share their stadium and both play both in Serie A. They name of stadium is ´Stadio Olimpico´ and is in the street Via Foro Italico.

Roma and Lazio supporters want to be the champions every season but it is more important to finish above the other team. Therefore games between these two rivals are always classics, with the tension stretching to last minute. Look on their websites for tickets.

As Roma

Roma's supporters, known as romanisti, are traditionally from the working-class left, from Rome's Jewish community and from Trastevere and Testaccio.

Lazio Roma

Lazio fans are traditionally from provincial towns outside Rome although the team is now popular with wealthier middle-class Romans.
