Getting about in Rome can often be an eventful experience, and is always a colourful one. Only very confident drivers should consider getting about by car. Traffic lights are routinely ignored, orchestral symphonies of beeping horns provide the soundtrack, and traffic circulates at insanely high speeds. The locals have a highly developed and extremely expressive range of hand gestures to communicate anything from minor irriation to full on road rage.
Pedestrians hardly fare better. Zebra crossings are ignored, and not having wheels and not being made of metal places them at the bottom of the pecking order. Often the only way to cross is to step into the road, holding a hand out towards the on-coming traffic and fix the driver with your best "you do not want my death on your conscience" stare.
